Hello, I'm Alice.
I'm a Senior Lecturer on BA (Hons) Graphic Design and Founder of AUB Human. I'm also undertaking a practice-based PhD.
In 2016, inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, I founded AUB Human, a university-wide platform that celebrates social, ethical and sustainable creative practice. As part of this initiative, I have convened numerous symposia, spoken at external conferences, facilitated knowledge exchange partnerships, undertaken personal volunteering and published an AUB Human book.
Prior to academia, I designed and directed numerous animated title sequences and sets for Channel 4 and Five as well as being represented as motion graphics director by Sherbet, directing commercials for Ogilvy and clients such as Kimberley-Clarke and Mattel. Some of these project have won major industry awards including Roses and The Drum. In 2016, I was invited by Channel 4 to co-design a special edition of Eurotrash to coincide with the UK's referendum on the European Union, a programme that boasted 20%+ audience share across 10 years.
As well as serving as a BAFTA judge for the Animation Category, my personal work has been exhibited at the V&A, I have also received funding from the BFI where I made a short film which was subsequently screened by Channel 4 and won the Special Prize for Design at the Ottawa Animation Festival in Canada. My work has also been featured in numerous magazines including Creative Review, Televisual, Broadcast, Campaign and newspapers such as The Telegraph and The Guardian.
I'm currently a full-time member of staff at AUB and teach on BA (Hons) Graphic Design. Since 2019, I have also been the External Examiner at UAL London College of Communication for Diploma in Professional Studies.
In addition to my main role, I was elected Academic Board Member (2019-2021) and from 2016-2021, I was a member of the AUB Environment Committee, a role where I have been proud to contributing to help AUB Achieve EcoCampus Platinum status and become a registered Fairtrade University.
I have also been recognised in the AUBSU ‘Thank You’ Awards as Winner in 2021, as inaugural Winner of the Sustainability Award in 2019 and as Silver Award Winner in 2015.
Prior to teaching at AUB, I was a Visiting Lecturer at Kingston University and UAL Central Saint Martins where I contributed to various programmes including MA Communication Design and BA Graphic Design.
I'm currently undertaking a part-time, practice-based PhD across i-DAT and the Sustainable Earth Institute at University of Plymouth.
My PhD research explores how ecolinguistics can be used as a generative methodology to disrupt existing dominant narratives that are having an adverse effect on the planet. Subsequently, the project aims to discover new forms of communication that act as a catalyst for positive behaviour change to create a more sustainable and regenerative world.
Published AUB Human outputs:
In December 2020 we published the first AUB Human book. The book is an anthology of selected AUB Human projects that were undertaken during the 2019-2020 academic year. The book itself was a personal project and collaboration between Natalie Carr, AUB Human intern, and myself, and was created during the Covid-19 pandemic whilst the campus was in lockdown.
In July 2021, we published the second AUB Human publication, SCAN ME, an interactive newspaper with AR cover. The newspaper was another personal project and collaboration between Natalie Carr, AUB Human intern, and myself, but also created an opportunity for student, Soumi Issa to develop skills in 3D and work with new member of staff Ben Parker to create the augmented reality cover.
