Dr Andrew Vallance is the MA Film Practice Award Leader and Associate Professor at Arts University Bournemouth. He studied his Master’s and PhD at the Royal College of Art. His thesis considered film and memory. He is also an artist, curator and writer.
He co-founded Contact with Simon Payne and together they have developed numerous projects initially Assembly: A Survey of Recent British Artists’ Film and Video, 2008-13 (Tate Britain) and most recently the publication Film Talks: 15 Conversations on Experimental Cinema.
Film and Memory
My PhD, Memories Made in Seeing: Film as Memory, Memory as Film, considered how films represent memories and, in turn, become memories themselves, and how this can inform our understanding of the importance of remembrance and its depiction. This is an ongoing interest.
Experimental film and artist moving image.
Curatorially I am investigating a ‘discursive’ methodology with accompanying exhibition strategies, which focuses on experimental film and artist moving image. This was most recently explored through the publication Film Talks: 15 Conversation on Experimental Cinema and its accompanying screening series Film Talks: Live.
