James attended the University of Southampton where he undertook a BA (Hons) in English Literature and an MA in Creative Writing. He consolidated his studies with a PhD in English Literature and Creative Writing, also at Southampton, where he has since taught on various modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level. For the past ten years, James has led workshops and held community-based residencies within the local area, hoping to foster a love for reading and writing.
Following a year as Writer in Residence, he is currently Senior Lecturer and Course Leader for BA (Hons) Creative Writing at Arts University Bournemouth.
His writing has appeared in Aesthetica and Unwrapped (Torque Press). His novel, Reading Through Binoculars, was shortlisted for the Dundee International Book Prize 2016
James leads BA (Hons) Creative Writing at AUB, teaching across all levels and units. Previously he has taught at the University of Southampton on undergraduate, postgraduate, and lifelong learning courses. He is External Examiner at Leeds Beckett University and Bath Spa University.
James is interested in research across a variety of areas including children's and Young Adult literature; queer theory and writing from and for marginalised communities; literary representations of the monster and the monstrous; and creative writing pedagogy and theory.
