After 20 years in architectural practice in the UK and Switzerland designing a wide range of buildings, industrial, commercial, residential, and renovating and restoring historic buildings, I returned to academic activities when I embarked on a PhD at Oxford Brookes University in 1989. My interest in self-build architecture led me to concentrate on the constructional as well as the social and cultural aspects of design. I subsequently developed my interest in doing research and research teaching, writing and supervision.
My present role at AUB is to help promote research activities throughout the university and to provide supervision for PhD students, as well as mentoring new supervisors and advising on preparing research proposals for funding from UK and EU sources.
My university teaching and examining experience has been at all levels, with the preponderance at postgraduate level, concentrating chiefly on research methods. I have also taught on the design, construction and performance of buildings. I relate these closely to the other aspects of architectural design, such as social, cultural, historic, and aesthetic, and regard these aspects to be intricately enmeshed with the technical issues of design.
At AUB, I have created a comprehensive suite of papers on how to do research, aimed at existing and potential PhD students, and advice to new PhD supervisors. I am currently supervising one PhD student at AUB, and also currently teaching Common Research Methods in the Faculty of TDE Doctoral Training Programme at Oxford Brookes University, as well as supervising as Director of Studies one student in their PhD research. I have supervised to successful completion 20 PhDs and 2 MPhils, 1 KTP, and examined 12 PhDs.
I have published several popular textbooks and guides on construction aspects and on how to do research for students and practitioners and how to write PhD theses, Master's and Undergraduate dissertations.
RESEARCH AND CONSULTANCY
Apart from my work at AUB, I am presently acting as a freelance research writer for Sage Publications, Routledge and Epigeum. Previously, as Senior Researcher, Oxford Institute of Sustainable Development – Architectural Engineering Group, my research has been based mainly on the technology and physics of building construction - innovative, existing and historic, sometimes within a social context as in vernacular architecture, and issues regarding accessibility in buildings and surroundings. My published papers and reports are read internationally and have been presented at conferences in many parts of Europe.

I am interested in receiving applications from prospective PhD students who wish to study any subject in the creative arts, and particularly in the social, technical, cultural aspects of the built environment. If necessary, I will partner with a specialist supervisor in the chosen subject, and concentrate on the research theory, thesis structure, methodology, rigour and strength of argument etc.
